Abstract

This article proposes a comparative reading between the five key dynamics of the VIVA call for proposals (Valorize, Imagine, Aim, Learn, Innovate) and research in information and communication sciences (ICS) on memory, cultural, and heritage mediation. Drawing on Chapter 5 of the edited volume Dynamics of Research in Information and Communication Sciences (Douyère et al., 2025), it explores how ICS particularly around the themes of memory as a social process, the evolving museum matrix, intangible heritage, and the ubiquity of digital technology in mediation can help design foster a broader reflection on its role in the construction of a living heritage. The article argues that design’s strength lies in its ability to articulate three domains that ICS has long studied separately: the preservation of traces, the mediation of knowledge, and community participation. It argues that the ICS can provide design with the concepts and methods to reflect on its own practices and make visible the mechanisms of mediation it employs, thereby opening them up to critical scrutiny. This approach is not abstract: it is a proposal for a creative act that integrates reflection and communication into the action.
